An inmate at the Boyd County Detention has died. He tested positive for COVID-19, but never showed any signs of the virus. The medical examiner’s office is still trying to determine the official cause of death. Inmates and staff are being tested for COVID-19.
The man charged with shooting four people at an Ironton bar, gave police the wrong name when he was arrested. Twenty-six-year-old Tayvon Gaulds used his brother’s name. More charges are pending. All four victims suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Dozens of people showed up at the Capitol, despite the postponement of the “I Can’t Breathe WV” protest. Demonstrators showed up to peacefully protest police brutality and call for racial equality. The group then moved to the Stonewall Jackson statue on the Capitol grounds, calling for its removal.
A protest scheduled for Sunday in Charleston was abruptly postponed. Organizers said they received credible threats that may have kept the demonstration from remaining peaceful and worries over safety contributed to the postponement. A West Virginia fire commissioner has been removed over “inappropriate and inflammatory” social media posts. Gov. Jim Justice said Martin Hess was removed from the West Virginia State Fire Commission after Justice was made aware of the posts.
