WV Senate passes suicide prevention education bill

The state Senate approved a bill that would require educators to teach classes about suicide prevention and awareness. The most recent data shows that suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in West Virginia, and nationally suicide is the second leading cause of death among people between the ages of ten and twenty-four.

State BOE passes rules governing charter schools

The state Board of Education voted to accept rules governing the establishment of charter schools in West Virginia. The state legislature approved the establishment of charter schools last year, despite opposition from teachers unions.

Police identify suspect and victim in West Side homicide

Police have released the names of the suspect and the victim in an officer-involved shooting on the west side. The suspect, 27-year-old Joshua Drennen, attacked an officer and was shot and wounded. Drennen is accused of killing 77-year-old Barbara Steele inside her home on Georgia Street.

Mingo County rock slide

Some areas could see over an inch-and-a-half of rain before it starts to taper off into mid-morning. A major rock and mudslide occurred in Williamson. West 3rd Avenue is shut down near Old Stewards Drive-In. A car was hit, but no one was hurt.

Mason County Accident Victim is Identified

Deputies have released the name of the person killed in an accident Tuesday on U.S. 35 near state Route 2 in the Point Pleasant area. A tractor-trailer went off the bridge and exploded near the 3 mile intersection, and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office said the truck’s operator, Yasin Bey of Baskerville, Virginia was killed. … Read more
