Driver leads police on high-speed pursuit

A person is in custody for leading police on a high speed chase that started in Hurricane and ended in Nitro. The driver reached speeds of over one-hundred-miles-per-hour before hitting a guard rail, and trying to run away.

Charleston police chief submits use of force action plan

Charleston Police Chief Tyke Hunt is submitting an action plan to Mayor Amy Goodwin, after officers shot a man with a knife last month. The plan calls for no lethal shotgun ammunition, a revised Taser policy, more body cameras, and officers have been recertified in the use of Tasers.

Demonstrators call for release of classroom video

A group of demonstrators gathered outside the Kanawha Board of Education building to call for the release of classroom video that shows special needs students being abused at Horace Mann Middle School. Kanawha County Schools says state law prohibits releasing the video.

Boone County Moves to Red on the Daily Alert Map

Boone County moved into the red on the West Virginia county alert map – the daily snapshot of the number of COVID cases in the state. Boone County is the state’s only county in red. Thirteen counties were in yellow, including Kanawha County.

Charter School Bill is in Effect

West Virginia will now allow public charter schools. The bill signed by Gov. Jim Justice went into effect June 1 and allows for creation of 10 charter schools over the next three years.
