Both the state House and Senate have passed a bill to expand the state’s charter school system. The Senate will sign off on some last minute modifications, and the bill will be sent to the governor. Justice hasn’t commented on the possibility of charter school expansion.
The Kanawha County Commission is opposing a bill in the state legislature that would lift restrictions on nearly nine-hundred above ground storage tanks. The bill would roll back protections that were put in place following the Elk River chemical spill that left three-hundred-thousand people without drinking water.
Governor Justice is expanding COVID-19 vaccine eligibility. Anyone fifty and older is now eligible for the vaccine, and vaccinations will begin soon for school employees between the ages of forty and fifty. The No. 20 West Virginia women’s basketball team scored the number two seed in next week’s Big-12 Conference tournament with a 72-to-64 win at K-State.
An 87-year-old Ravenswood man suffered burns over sixty-percent of his body when he fell into a brush fire. The fire quickly got out of control and burned a vheicle. He was flown to a regional burn unit.
Fire destroyed a home on Laxon Lane in Hurricane. The family and pets made it out safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
While the Ohio River has crested, it will take some time to fall substantially. The river will fall below flood stage by this evening, and most roads should be able to reopen. Conditions will improve in the backwater areas, like Barboursville, too.
Governor Justice is declaring a state of emergency in eighteen West Virginia counties. The governor says help is on the way for everything from clearing blocked streets to restoring power. River levels are still a concern, especially along the Ohio River.

The city of Charleston set up a site yesterday to take supply donations and to coordinate volunteers who want to help with flood cleanup. The city also said the Public Works Department will be making additional trash runs on the West Side the next few days.
