More than 200 new cases of COVID-19 in WV

West Virginia’s virus reproductive rate is up again. The “Rt value” is at one-point-zero-two, which means the virus will spread quickly. West Virginia is reporting over two-hundred new cases of the virus, but no deaths. There are almost 180 people in the hospital.

Governor calling for more testing

Governor Justice is calling for more coronavirus testing at ten counties move into the orange category. Wyoming County moved into the red. Officials are concerned about the virus being spread at family gatherings, or gatherings of friends.

“Porch Pirate” under arrest

A porch pirate is under arrest. He stole several packages from a porch on Quarrier Street, and was captured on surveillance video. Officers searched the area and found the suspect behind the Par Mar store on Washington Street East.

Ex-Postal employee pleads guilty in marijuana scheme

A former postal worker is admitting to his role in a scheme to ship and distribute marijuana from California to Huntington. Forty-nine-year-old Carl Varnum recruited a mail carrier to receive the packages and deliver them on his route. Varnum faces up to five years in prison.

Free COVID Testing Today in Charleston

More free coronavirus testing events are scheduled throughout West Virginia this week. Testing will be available today in Jackson and Kanawha counties. In Jackson County the testing happens at the ElderCare Parking Lot, 9 a.m. – noon. In Kanawha County testing is happening at the John XXIII Pastoral Center, noon – 6 p.m.

Man Wanted in Michigan is Arrested in Charleston

A man has been arrested in West Virginia after his ex-girlfriend’s throat was slit with a box cutter earlier this month. She was taking personal protection order documents to a suburban Detroit police station when the incident happened. National Guard Will Increase Its COVID Response

FEMA has given the West Virginia National Guard authorization to increase the number of personnel helping with COVID-19 response to 400. The Guard said it has 379 members on duty now and has distributed more than 19 million pieces of personal protective equipment to all 55 counties. Rural Communities To Benefit From A New Broadband Project

More than 6,000 people in Barbour, Randolph, Webster and Doddridge counties will get connected to broadband internet service thanks to a federal project. The funding for the nearly $8 million project is coming from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of the second round of the ReConnect Program, which helps rural areas.
