Positive Test Rate Stays Below 3 Percent

West Virginia’s COVID-19 positive test rate continued to hold under the 3% mark Tuesday, with 14 new positive cases and no new deaths. The state Department of Health and Human Resources said the state’s cumulative percent positive test rate was at 2.26%. According to the DHHR’s website, 630 have recovered.

The Tour de Coal and the St. Albans YakFest are officially canceled this year. The events were scheduled for June and normally attract thousands of people to the area. Organizers for the events hope to reschedule in the fall.

WVU Medicine lost $75 million during COVID-19 suspension

WVU Medicine lost 75-million-dollars during the 45-day suspension because of the coronavirus. The hospital system will make up for the loss with 45-million-dollars in CARES Act money and advances on Medicare payments. The system is slowly returning to normal and is at about 70-percent capacity.

Thousands of WV families will receive pandemic food benefit

Thousands of West Virginia families will get some help feeding their kids this summer. The state was approved for Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer cards. Families with school children who already qualify for free or reduced price school meals will get over 300-dollars per child to cover the summer months.

More businesses can reopen next week

Physical therapy centers and drive-in movie theaters will be allowed to reopen next week in phase three of Governor Justice’s reopening plan. The Governor also removed Cabell, Wayne and Wood counties from the coronavirus hotspot list. Five more counties are still on the list and are under greater restriction.

WV woman charged with storing top-secret documents

A West Virginia woman is charged with storing top-secret documents from the National Security Agency in her storage unit. Elizabeth Jo Shirley is charged with possessing documents “relating to the national defense.” She’s already facing charges for kidnapping her 6-year-old daughter last July. They were found weeks later in Mexico City.

Body found in Clay County creek

State police are investigating after a body was discovered in a creek behind the Big Otter GoMart. The state Medical Examiner’s office is trying to identify the man and the cause of death.
