Toyota is suspending production for two days at all its North American automobile plants. Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Putnam County will be closed March 23rd and 24th.
The West Virginia DMV is closing its regional offices. Driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations with expiration date in March or April will be extended for three months. The DMV headquarters in Charleston will remain open for online and mail-in transactions.
The closure list is getting longer. Governor Justice is closing gyms, health clubs, and rec centers for two weeks in an effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Earlier this week, restaurants, bars and casinos were shut down. Restaurants can still deliver takeout and delivery.
There are two confirmed case of COVID-19 in West Virginia. The new case is in Mercer County, and the original is in Shepherdstown. Both cases are linked to travel. The state public health lab has tested 148 West Virginians for the virus, 143 test results were negative, and three are pending.
Governor Jim Justice ordered restaurants and bars to close down dining room service, but many of them are still offering takeout and delivery service. West Virginia University Medicine said it is setting up five drive-through collection points in state to collect specimens from pre-screened patients to test for COVID-19. The collection points will be in Morgantown, Parkersburg, Bridgeport, Wheeling, and Martinsburg. Ohio University announced Wednesday it is postponing all spring commencement ceremonies. Those had been planned for May 1-2 and graduation recognition activities were to be on all regional campuses. The university said when it’s safe to be together again, they’ll immediately begin planning a postponed Commencement celebration.
One of the largest festivals in the state will not happen this May. The 79th annual Strawberry Festival in Buckhannon will have to wait until 2021. West Virginia has its second confirmed case of the coronavirus. The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said the individual is from Mercer County and is being treated at home.
