Employees at a hardware store in Charleston said a gunman shot an employee after a shoplifting incident. Petition filed to block state’s color-coded alert system

A petition filed in Kanawha County is seeking to block enforcement of the state’s metrics and color-coded map. The petition claims the county alert system map discriminates against children by preventing them from receiving a free education and participating in sports and extracurricular activities.

WV will distribute additional unemployment benefits

WorkForce West Virginia will begin distributing an additional four-hundred-dollars-per-week in COVID-19 unemployment benefits. The state is approved to pay five-weeks of benefits retroactively. If you are eligible for all five-weeks, you will get a two-thousand-dollar check, minus any taxes.

Woman pleads guilty to bank fraud and stealing mail

A Charleston woman pleaded guilty to bank fraud and possession of stolen mail. Thirty-six-year-old Samantha Miller admitted to stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of checks out of mail boxes, and trying to cash them at various banks. She faces up to 35-years in prison.

Free Wi-Fi available at Community Centers

The City of Charleston is making it easier to get online. Community Centers will open their doors for internet access. The Kanawha City, Martin Luther King Jr., Roosevelt Neighborhood, and North Charleston community centers will be open Monday through Friday starting at 7 a.m. All locations will offer free Wi-Fi

Color-coded map updates will be released earlier

The West Virginia Board of Education is making some changes to improve communication. The state’s color coded map will now be released at five p.m. on Saturdays to give families and school leaders more time to prepare for the upcoming week.
