Vacant Home Catches Fire

An investigation is underway after a vacant house fire Wednesday night in Charleston. Flames took down a home in the 1800 block of Coral Drive, but the house was empty so no one was hurt. Charleston firefighters said the home had working utilities at the time. They’re looking into the cause of the blaze.

Free flu shots on MLK Day

The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department will off free flu shots on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The vaccine will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday at the health deparment.

Gallo takes plea deal

City of Charleston Community Relations Coordinator Alexandra Gallo is taking a plea deal in an incident last November when she tried to force her way into a babysitter’s home to get her child. She’s charged with battery, trespassing and public intoxication. Gallo will serve a year’s probation and complete fifty-hours of community service.

Blankenship conviction won’t be overturned

A judged denied former coal executive Don Blakenship’s request to overturn his 2015 conviction on a mine safety conspiracy charge in connection to an explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine that killed 29-workers. Blankenship argued that errors and undisclosed evidence violated his constitutional rights.

Kanawha County deputies served a series of warrants to family court offenders. Officers made several arrests in the Piedmont Road and Rand areas. Most of the arrests were for failure to pay child support.

Stolen car crashes into West Side home

A man is under arrest for crashing a stolen car into a West Side home. Thirty-two-year-old Shawn Martin is charged DUI and fleeing. Martin was driving 90-miles-per-hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone when he crashed into a home at the corner of West Washington Street and Garvin Avenue.

Recovery Center destroyed in fire

The Paintsville Recovery Center is a total loss after a fire. The center caught fire a few months, and investigators are calling it suspicious. No one was hurt. The Center says they plan to rebuild.
