Shelter dogs could become official state dog

The state animal is the black bear, and the state bird is the cardinal…West Virginia senators approved a resolution designating dogs adopted from animal shelters and rescues as the official West Virginia state dog.

The state legislature is considering a controversial abortion bill. “The Born Alive Protection Act” would require medical professionals to provide the same life-saving measures for a child born alive during an abortion procedure, as they would for a baby born prematurely.

State and county considering paid family leave

The Kanawha County commission and the state Legislature are considering paid family leave bills. Public employees would be allowed to take twelve-weeks of paid family leave to take care of children or seriously ill family members.

Third horse rescued from Kentucky strip mine

A third horse has been rescued from a Kentucky strip mine where twenty other horses were found shot to death. Rescue groups were able to save the horses after the sound of distant gun fire scared them off. A $23,000 reward is being offered for information about the shootings.

Man confesses to stealing heavy equipment

A man is under arrest for stealing heavy equipment from the Athens County Engineer’s Office Substation, and parking the machinery in a church parking lot in Jackson County. Twenty-five-year-old Robert Reel II confessed to the theft.

Woman injured in stabbing at Transit Mall

Two people are under arrest following a stabbing at the Transit Mall. A woman stabbed another woman in the back. The victim is in stable condition. The suspect, 40-year-old Tara Dunkle is charged with malicious wounding. Dunkles’ fiancé was also taken into custody on unrelated charges.

Charleston Hosts Naturalization Ceremony

Dozens of people in Charleston became naturalized citizens at a ceremony this week. Nearly 50 U.S. residents are now naturalized U.S. citizens following a special ceremony witnessed by family and friends Monday morning at the Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse. Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas Johnson presided over the ceremony.
