Free fishing this weekend

This weekend is West Virginia’s annual free fishing weekend. Today and tomorrow no fishing license, trout stamp, or national forest stamp is required. DNR stocked nearly six-thousand pounds of channel catfish in over forty ponds and lakes.

Manchin supports Confederate name change

Senator Joe Manchin is one of the U.S. senators supporting a proposal that would require the U.S. Department of Defense to remove Confederate names, monuments, or symbols from military bases and equipment. At least five military bases would have to change their names. That process could take up to three-years.

COVID-19 testing complete at correctional facilities

All inmates and employees at West Virginia’s correctional facilities have been tested for the coronavirus. There are nine active cases, including four at the Huttonsville Correctional Center, where a spike in cases led to statewide testing. Governor Justice says the overwhelming results are negative. Free COVID-19 testing Saturday

More than seven-thousand people have been tested for COVID-19 in Kanawha County. There is a free testing site today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. across from Laidley Field in Charleston. No appointment is necessary.

Two more people die from COVID-19

Two more people have died from COVID-19 in West Virginia. A 73-year-old Mingo County man and a 78-year-old Berkeley County man passed away, bringing the state’s death toll to 88. There are sixteen new cases of the virus, for a total of over 22-hundred. The positive test rate is below two-percent.

There is a COVID-19 hotspot in Greenbrier County. Nine new cases of the virus have been confirmed in the past 24-hours. 35,000 fraudulent unemployment claims filed in WV

WorkForce West Virginia has received 35-thousand fraudulent Unemployment claims in the past two weeks. Officials have tracked down some of the scammers to the Charleston area. They are using personal information that was stolen earlier this year in national data breaches. Investigators say they will aggressively pursue and prosecute the perpetrators.

Mothman Festival is off

The 2020 Mothman Festival is off. The festival celebrating the legend of the 1966 Point Pleasant Mothman sighting was planned for September. Organizers pulled the plug because of the coronavirus.

Suspects wanted in vehicle break-ins

West Virginia State Police are looking for two men who broke into several cars and stole wallets in the Fayette County. It happened in May, and the credit cards that were stolen have been used several times. State Police posted surveillance phots of the suspects online.

Police looking for man missing since February

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man who has been missing since February. Forty-six-year-old Michael Greene abruptly quit his job, and told people he met someone online. Police believe the person he met was from Cabell or Putnam County.
