Members of the 111th Engineering Brigade of the West Virginia National Guard are on duty in McDowell County. Nearly two dozen guardsmen are working to remove debris from recent flooding along Elkhorn Creek and the Tug Fork River. They hope to have their work wrapped this weekend.
Neighbors and church leaders in Glasgow have reached a compromise after some residents lodged noise complaints. Multiple fire departments battled a full-involved trailer fire on Dalewood Drive in Cross Lanes. No one was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The owner of a crumbling building in the East End has been given until Monday to salvage the building. Parts of Washington Street East and Elizabeth Street will remain closed because of safety concerns. Charleston’s St. Agnes School will close at the end of the school year. The private school’s accompanying child-care facility will also close. The parish cites a three-hundred-thousand-dollars shortfall and declining enrollment as reasons for the closure. Only forty-students are enrolled this school year.
Marshall University’s aviation school is ready for take-off. The University has purchased three airplanes for just over a million-dollars. The board also approved a name, it will be called the Bill Noe Flight School. The school will be located at Yeager Airport.
The state House of Delegates adopted a resolution calling for an investigation into the business practices of Alecto Health Care Services, which owns Fairmont Regional Medical Center, and also owned the now closed Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling. The resolution says Alecto promised to improve its bottom line in 2014, and that didn’t happen.
Governor Justice says he’ll do everything he can to keep the doors open at Fairmont Regional Medical Center. Justice met with hospital officials yesterday. More than six-hundred doctors, nurses and staff received 60-day layoff notices.
The Kanawha County Commission is opposing the state Senate’s tax proposal. The commission says eliminating property tax on machinery and equipment, and increasing sales tax, will hurt local governments. Commissioners say the county stands to lose over 20-million-dollars in revenue.
The Kanawha County Commission is planning to stock a thousand pounds of rainbow trout in the Elk River this weekend. The Indian Lake fish hatchery will provide the trout. It’s the third trout stock in less than six months.
