New Fish Habit Will Come From an Old Utility Barge

A former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers utility barge has been fitted with a tilting platform that turns it into a floating dump truck. The Gazette-Mail reported the Division of Natural Resources plans to load trees onto the platform and sink them into the lakes to create structures that not only attract fish, but also give young fish places to hide from predators. The goal is to create more and bigger fish habitat in some of West Virginia’s most popular lakes. Rat’s Marine Service in Flatwoods has retrofitted the barge with motors and testing is underway at Stonewall Jackson Lake.
