Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito are pushing to make New River Gorge into a national park and preserve. The senators cite a study that shows elevating an area to national park status can increase visitors by over twenty-percent. A hearing will be held at Tamarack today, and comments from the field hearing will be submitted to the Senate Energy and Natural Resource Committee.
