Impact of Coronavirus May Change Voting Habits

The state’s primary election is still scheduled for May 12, but election officials are concerned people will be afraid to get out and vote. The number of registered voters in West Virginia is about 1.2 million. West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner says he’s looking at a no-excuse-needed absentee ballot as a way around that problem. Current law requires a reason like military service or illness to vote absentee. Kanawha County Clerk Vera McCormick said it would be impossible to provide absentee ballots for everyone. Early voting begins April 29. McCormick said voters can avoid crowds by voting early at the seven locations in Kanawha County.
