Charleston Leaders Release Statements on George Floyd’s Death

Protests continue around the country to honor the death of George Floyd in Minnesota. Hundreds have gathered on the steps of city hall in Charleston over the past few days, and other demonstrations have happened at the state capitol and in Huntington. Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin and police chief Tyke Hunt released a statement on the protests saying they appreciate those who made their voices heard and kept protests peaceful. Chief Hunt said Floyd’s death was due to an officer’s poor tactics and decision making, and the officer was in the wrong. Chief Hunt said he has made it clear to his officers that the Charleston Police Department will show that its primary goals are to protect life and property.
