Kanawha County Students Wait To See If Color Classification Changes

Kanawha County Schools has released additional information in the wake of it being designated as an orange county in the latest school re-entry map. The school system said the orange designation applies for the week of Aug. 30 to Sept. 5 and only affects extracurricular and athletic activities for the week. All sports are permitted to practice, but not compete for the week. Competitions can resume once the county returns to yellow or green in a future map update from the West Virginia Department of Education. The next scheduled update from the WVDE is Saturday, Sept. 5 at 9 p.m., which will determine the level of in-person instruction that will be permitted on the first day of school. If Kanawha remains orange, the county will not be able to return to in-person learning on Sept. 8th as planned and all students will begin remote learning.
