Kanawha County Schools Deal With Staffing Shortages

Kanawha County Superintendent Tom Williams said the lengths of the county’s five new school closures vary because there isn’t a single approach that will work for every case. Alum Creek Elementary is closed all week due to a staffing shortage, while George Washington High and Hayes Middle were just closed Monday. Capital High is closed through today (Wednesday) and Edgewood Elementary is closed through Thursday. There’s still the concern of having enough teachers in the classroom. Kanawha County has taken advantage of the offer from the state to allow college education seniors to come in as substitute teachers. Williams said the county has done this about 18 times.
