Six Families Settle With VA Hospital Over Wrongful Deaths

The families of six veterans who died at the VA Medical Center in Clarksburg have agreed to settlements with the government. Five of the families reached tentative agreements ranging from $700,000-$975,000. The attorney said the settlement limits are capped under West Virginia law, restricting the amount of money that can be recovered by the victims and their families. The attorney noted that they are still investigating as many as 12 other suspicious deaths linked to the facility.

Former nursing assistant Reta Mays pleaded guilty to seven counts of second-degree murder and one count of assault with the intent to commit murder earlier this year. Mays worked as a nursing assistant at the medical center from 2015 to 2018 and was responsible for the testing of the vitals of patients, monitoring their glucose levels and sitting with patients, according to U.S. Attorney Bill Powell.
