An inmate at Mount Olive Correctional Complex in Fayette County died Friday night after being assaulted by another inmate. Brian Gifft died at a hospital following the assault, according to a news release from the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security. Investigators believe Gifft was attacked with a makeshift weapon that was found after the incident. The assault occurred in one of the prison’s housing units. A suspect has not been named while officials complete their investigation. Gifft was serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for a 2016 murder in Jefferson County.
