Charleston police officer Cassie Johnson was laid to rest Tuesday. Johnson died last Thursday at Charleston Area Medical Center after she was shot two days earlier on Garrison Avenue while responding to a parking complaint. Joshua Phillips is still hospitalized at Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital after also being shot and receiving serious injuries. No charges have been filed yet, but police said he will be charged with first-degree murder.
Several Charleston businesses have made signs and displays honoring Johnson and they’ve offered discounts to first responders and donated portions of their proceeds to help the officer’s family. The Charleston Police Department has retired her 146 unit number.
