Tributes poured in this week to honor the legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager. He grew up in Hamlin and joined the army in 1941, starting out in airplane maintenance and joined the flight program a year later. In World War II, he survived being shot down over France to take out 13 enemy planes. His greatest achievement came on Oct. 14, 1947, when he piloted a Bell Aircraft X-1 and shattered the sound barrier, despite flying with two broken ribs he injured while horseback riding in the desert. His military career continued through the Vietnam War. Chuck Yeager passed away this week at the age of 97.
