A former volunteer fire chief in Raleigh County has been charged with embezzlement and fraudulent schemes after prosecutors said he stole more than $130,000 from a fire department. Kenneth Churning is accused of stealing more than $133,000 from the Sophia Volunteer Fire Department. The state auditor’s office said the total includes about $118,000 in ATM and cash withdrawals, $13,000 in cash back transactions and personal expense reimbursements of $1,200. The alleged actions occurred between July 2017 and December 2019.
