Budget Bill Passes Along With Mylissa Smith’s Law

The West Virginia Legislature passed two notable bills Saturday including a $4.4 billion budget bill after debate over funding cuts to Marshall University and West Virginia University. The bill would call for a $28 million combined general revenue cut for the two institutions. State departments across the board are expected to see cuts under the plan. Lawmakers also passed Mylissa Smith’s Law, which would establish that visitation of a patient is allowed at any time if the patient’s death is imminent. The legislation was prompted by restrictions that came about during the COVID-19 pandemic. A bill aimed at streamlining and expediting the installation of broadband in the state was also completed Saturday night. The legislation would also provide more consumer protections for broadband users.
