With work zones going in all 55 counties and the construction season stepping up next month, top highway officials called for heads up and phones down in a new safety effort. Last year, 702 crashes were reported in West Virginia work zones leading to 238 injuries and four deaths. Road checks show 43% of drivers are speeding and distracted driving is a continued concern too. Bob Tipton with the Governor’s Highway Safety Program said most of the incidents in works zones are avoidable. The “heads up phones down” traffic safety campaign is on now.
