Roane County firefighters want to make sure there are working smoke alarms in every house. Because of the distance between fire stations and homes in rural areas, smoke alarms can help save lives before firefighters arrive. Roane County has had several fatal fires in the past few years, including a fire two weeks ago that killed two people. The State Fire Marshal investigated and concluded that the home did not have smoke alarms. Now firefighters have a new initiative to install smoke alarms free of charge in Roane County. The number to call to set up an appointment is (304) 927-0918. It’s a partnership with the West Virginia Fire Marshal’s office.
