DOJ challenging WV’s transgender atlete ban

The U.S. Department of Justice is challenging West Virginia’s new law prohibiting transgender athletes from competing on female sports teams. The DOJ submitted a “statement of interest” in a case brought on behalf of an eleven-year-old Harrison County transgender girl who wants to compete in cross country. The Justice Department believes the challenge will succeed based on the merits of her Title IX and equal protection claims.
