The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center estimates a 3.5 percent drop in college enrollment for the spring semester. That’s a greater drop in enrollment than in the fall semester, when it was 2.6 percent nationwide. Factors that contributed to the drop include economic stress, instruction still being online in some cases, and vaccines becoming widely available after the semester started. The largest drop in enrollment was felt at the community college level, and that’s down about ten percent. Colleges are hoping for an increase this fall as the pandemic continues to fade.
