Arch Resources plans to open its new metallurgical coal mine near Philippi before the end of August. The company said in a news release that international markets for coal are improving and the opening of the mine comes at a time when it’s profitable for the company to produce coal. The company is in the midst of a 30-day planned suspension of mining at Leer South to make improvements. Arch Resources has invested $392 million on mining projects at Leer South. Coal from Leer South is put into material that is used in making steel.
