Captain James David Byrd, a 22-year veteran of the Charleston Fire Department, passed away last week. Most recently he had been Captain of Station 8 on Copenhaver Drive. Captain Byrd was a member of the Urban Search and Rescue team and the city of Charleston said on its website that he used his skills to save countless lives throughout his career.
