Huntington Eliminates Its Business and Occupation Tax

Monday night, Huntington city council voted unanimously to permanently suspend the city’s business and occupation tax. The tax was temporarily suspended a year ago, during the pandemic, to try to help businesses that were struggling to stay afloat. Mayor Steve Williams says since the B&O tax was suspended, the city’s sales tax has helped fill the gap. The revenue loss from the elimination of the tax is $2 million, but the mayor says the city sales tax revenue exceeded expectations by more than $2 million. Mayor Williams was leading the charge to eliminate the tax permanently.
