Kanawha County school officials said construction on the new Clendenin Elementary School has been paused after a soil condition was discovered that needs additional investigation. The Kanawha County school system said pyritic sulfur has been identified in the soil, which can compromise the integrity of the foundation of the floor slab. The $34-million project underway on property off Elk River Road will be paused while they fiind an expert in the specific type of soil material that can help with next steps. Last week, school officials took a tour of the site, and construction workers said the new school was expected to open in August 2022. For now, Clendenin Elementary students are learning in portable classrooms at Bridge Elementary School.
