Millions of Dollars Will Help Expand Broadband in West Virginia

Efforts continue to increase broadband access across West Virginia. Gov. Jim Justice announced a billion-dollar strategy last week to bring broadband availability to 200,000 more West Virginia homes and businesses. The governor said it’s like nothing they’ve ever done before and the plan will combine funding from federal, state and local governments to accelerate the expansion of high-speed internet to underserved areas of the state. A $236 million state broadband program will be added to a $362 million in Federal Communications Commission funding and $120 million from other state and federal sources, for a total of $718 million in government funding expected to be allocated by fall 2022. According to the state Broadband Office, the combined resources will expand broadband ability to at least 200,000 new locations in the Mountain State.
