National Guard Begins Training to Help COVID-Stressed Hospitals

The West Virginia National Guard will prepare soldiers and airmen to help health care workers amid the spike in coronavirus cases. The accelerated training program is designed to assist hospitals that require extra staff due to overcrowding at state facilities, according to a news release from the National Guard. About 150 National Guard service members will take classes in medical and hospital support strategies starting today (Friday Jan 7). The training will take place at Camp Dawson in Kingwood in Preston County and last through Monday Jan. 10. Gov. Jim Justice said about 1,000 residents a day are getting their first dose of the vaccine, which will help maintain a functional hospital system that is struggling to treat those in need of care.
