Some Special Metal Workers on Strike Receive Layoff Notices

United Steelworkers Local 40 President Chad Thompson told WCHS TV that several members of the union, who have been on strike at Special Metals for 100 days, received layoff notices on Saturday morning. Thompson said back In December, they received a WARN notice that 75 people would lose their jobs as he says they were told Special Metals aims to stop making some specific products and lay off the associated people. However, Thompson says the company does have an obligation to bargain the effects of this which means fewer people could be impacted or even possibly none at all. The company and the union are set to return to the negotiation table on Tuesday. The layoff notice says it will go into effect on February 7.
