The Christmas and new year holidays set a record on the West Virginia Turnpike, with more than 1.2 million vehicles traveling through the toll booths.
Holiday traffic on the Turnpike for the 12-day period between Dec. 22, 2021, and Jan. 2, 2022, was up about 27.3% compared to 2020, according to the state Department of Transportation. Jeff Miller, executive director of the West Virginia Parkways Authority, said favorable weather and the days of the week in which the holidays fell played a part in the busy travel time.
