Right now truckers who are 18-20 years old are not allowed to cross state lines in the U.S., but a new federal apprenticeship program is changing that, allowing 3,000 from that age group a chance to drive interstate. WCHS TV said the new opportunity has West Virginia Trucking Association President Traci Nelson hopeful. The program could help attract that age group of workers to high-paying, good benefit jobs. Jump Start Training in Dunbar helps students get their CDL license and they see about 125 students a year. Lead instructor Jared Howell says demand for more drivers is high. It’s not clear yet how many of the 3,000 apprenticeships will be given to each state.
