Delays Possible as Work Continues on I-64 Project

Steel work will continue on the new Interstate 64 Nitro-St. Albans Bridge this week, with contractors hoisting bridge girders into place over WV 817. State highways officials said a total of 10 girders are to be hoisted onto their supports on the western end of the new bridge and traffic will be periodically disrupted. Work is scheduled between 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and is expected to continue throughout the week. The bridge, which carries Interstate 64 across the Kanawha River between the Nitro and St. Albans interchanges, is part of a $244.4 million project to widen 3.8 miles of I-64 to six lanes, and to eight lanes between Nitro and St. Albans. The construction of the new bridge is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.
