Lawmakers Seek to Name a Bridge After Cassie Johnson

The West Virginia House of Delegates adopted a resolution this week to honor Charleston officer Cassie Johnson by renaming a bridge in town after her. Under the resolution, the Washington Street Bridge that crosses over the Elk River would be renamed Charleston police officer Cassie Johnson – Fallen Heroes Memorial Bridge. Johnson was killed in December 2020 while responding to a disturbance call. The resolution also said signage will be displayed to identify the bridge under the new name. Lawmakers unanimously passed the resolution, which will mark the second memorial honoring a fallen Charleston officer along Washington Street. A memorial for fallen officers is located at the corner of Washington Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
