Murder Suspect in Patrolman Johnson’s Death to be Tried in Kanawha County

The man accused of murdering a Charleston police officer will stand trial in Kanawha County, at least for now. Joshua Phillips is charged with first-degree murder in the December 2020 shooting death of Patrolman Cassie Johnson. She was responding to a parking complaint on Garrison Avenue when police said she was involved in an exchange of gunfire with Phillips, and she died in the hospital two days later. A pre-trial hearing was held this week to address Phillips’ request to move the trial out of Kanawha County because of intense media coverage. Judge Jennifer Bailey decided to hold the change of venue motion in abeyance, but she could still rule to move the case out of Kanawha County at a later date. Jury selection is set to start on Monday.
