The trial for one of the defendants charged in connection to the murder of a woman whose body was found in a well in the Sissonville area has been pushed back. Michael Wayne Smith appeared virtually at a hearing to continue his trial. The defense said it needed more time to prepare after Smith’s attorney had recently left the public defender’s office. Smith and Virginia Marie Smith are both charged with first-degree murder for the death of Cheyenne Johnson. The two suspects are not related but investigators previously said they were in a short-term relationship. Johnson’s body was found in the well in May 2021.The two will stand trial next separately. Smith’s new trial has been set for Sept. 6.
