School Districts Face Challenges Brought on By Teacher Shortage

West Virginia’s teacher shortage impacted an elementary school in Boone County Friday. Ten teachers were out with COVID, which added to staffing issues at Van Elementary. The lack of substitute teachers in the state compounded the problem, so the Boone County Board of Education made a decision to close the school. There are still over 1,000 teacher vacancies in West Virginia. The National Center for Education said nearly half of American public schools have full or part-time teaching vacancies.
