A Kanawha County man pleaded guilty Tuesday to a scheme to defraud the Paycheck Protection program of more than $16,000 in COVID-19 relief loans. Federal prosecutors said 24-year old Calvin Butler of Dunbar pleaded guilty to wire fraud. Court documents said Butler provided his personal information to a person he met on Instagram who had offered to apply for a PPP loan on Butler’s behalf in exchange for $2,000 of the loan proceeds. The application falsely stating that Butler operated a barbershop and he admitted that he knew he was not eligible to receive a PPP loan. Butler also admitted that he proceeded with the scheme because he needed money to pay his bills. Butler will be sentenced on May 18th.
