Cleanup continues after Mingo County mudslide

Last Friday a mudslide in the Ragland area of Mingo County destroyed a home, ruined another and caused water damage in a third. It also derailed a train that was parked and loading up on coal. WCHS TV reported that three train cars flipped spilling coal into Rockhouse Creek. Representatives with Norfolk Southern and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection said that progress is being made with cleanup. The DEP ruled that a sediment ditch berm failed at the Coal-Mac coal mine above the area which caused the mountain to slide. The DEP has ordered that the mine pay for the recovery and cleanup efforts.
