The Clay County school board has been discussing the possibility of layoffs. A public hearing was part of the Clay County Board of Education meeting this week and some parents and teachers turned out to express concerns. Erin Thomas is a teacher at Clay County Middle School, and said with fewer teachers, it increases the class sizes and decreases the one-on-one chance for teachers and students. Superintendent, Joan Haynie, said the cuts are normal and occur every year. Eyewitness News said the Board of Education chose to table the terminations until they could discuss more about what the future holds for Clay County schools.
