Firefighter is released from the hospital after being injured on the job

A veteran firefighter was injured while battling a blaze at a vacant Charleston residence Sunday morning. The Charleston Fire Department reports a portion of the building’s second floor collapsed, pinning the firefighter under debris. Capt. John Hastings, an 18-year veteran of the Charleston Fire Department, was taken to an area trauma center after he was hurt in the fire in the 700 block of Crescent Road. Hastings’ injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. The blaze remains under investigation by state fire officials.
