WVU names its new mascot

A Boone County native has been named the 69th West Virginia University Mountaineer mascot. Mikel Hager, a four-year member of the WVU Gold Cheer Team, was announced as the new mascot during the men’s home basketball game against Kansas State Saturday. Hager is an exercise physiology major minoring in psychology and communication studies. The Madison native volunteers as a math tutor at Suncrest Elementary School in Morgantown and spends summers serving as an assistant coach for Scott High School. A “Passing of the Rifle” ceremony will be held on April 21 as Hager will accept the responsibilities as WVU’s mascot from current Mountaineer Mary Roush.
