Review finds Mingo County Schools violated Title IX

A review of the Mingo County school system found that administrators violated Title IX and did not complete investigations into “serial misconduct” for years. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights said the school district “did not respond equitably” to complaints of sexual assault involving students and staff from 2017 to 2020. Eyewitness News said the findings come as part of a compliance review of the school district. The review also found that Mingo County Schools violated Title IX by failing to identify a Title IX coordinator, failing to adopt and publish Title IX grievance procedures, failing to issue a notice of nondiscrimination that complied with Title IX and failing to adopt recordkeeping practices with regard to Title IX complaints. Mingo County Schools have taken several steps to fix the issues.
