Like Huntington, Charleston passes an ordinance that allows outdoor drinking

People visiting Charleston might soon be able to drink an alcoholic beverage in certain outdoor areas. Charleston City Council members voted to pass the Public Outdoor Designated Area, or “PODA,” ordinance Monday evening. The ordinance allows people to order alcoholic beverages from certain businesses and then drink them outdoors in permitted areas of the city during certain times. The businesses will have special cups marked “PODA.” The city would provide the first round of cups, and then businesses would pay for them after. The businesses that want to participate would have to apply and have approval from both the city and the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration. The city hopes to have the ordinance in place by November and it would run all year. Earlier this year, Huntington became the first city in West Virginia to approve the “PODA” ordinance.
