Longtime Kanawha County judge Joanna Tabit has died

Tabit was most recently serving as judge in West Virginia’s Thirteenth Circuit Court, which covers Kanawha County. She was appointed to court in 2014 by then-Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and won election in 2016. Chief Justice Beth Walker said in a statement that Tabit had a generous spirit and mentored many younger lawyers. The West Virginia Democratic Party also issued a statement on Tabit’s passing, calling her a revered and beloved member of the legal community. Sen. Joe Manchin also made a statement on Tabit’s legacy, calling her a role model and mentor. Black drapes will hang at the Kanawha County Judicial Building in Tabit’s honor.
